This time of year offers lots of opportunities for marketing, as well as lots of excuses not to do any marketing. Which will you look for--the opportunities, or the excuses?
Of course, if you are in retail, this is prime selling season as people shop for gifts. Even if you are not in a business which is traditionally gift-oriented, can you find a way to package and promote your products or services to attract gift buyers? You could offer a gift certificate for your services. Existing customers will appreciate that they have a way to share the positive experience they’ve had with their friends and colleagues. The bonus for you is that gift certificate customers often become repeat customers.
Keep in touch with customers (or resume contact with ‘lost’ customers) by sending holiday greetings. Make your greetings personal by adding a brief note and signature to a printed card. Or, have all of your staff members sign holiday cards.
Even if you don’t expect to make holiday gift sales, don’t completely stop marketing during the next month or two. It’s true that many businesses will hold off decisions until the new year, but you need to remain in front of them. And yes, many people are out of the office during this time, but the people who are there may be more approachable. They may have more time as fewer meetings are scheduled and the work load may be somewhat less.
And don’t forget publicity! TV and radio programs are still broadcasting, newspapers are being published every day, and magazines are planning issues that will appear months from now. Send press releases to keep your name out there.
Have a happy holiday season, but don’t take a holiday from marketing and growing your business.
