Motivation and Inspiration

Inspiration is a wonderful thing. But if you hear a story, read a book, watch a video, or listen to a speaker and get inspired, what do you do with the inspiration? Is it a good feeling that lasts for a few hours or a couple of days? Or does it motivate you to take action to make changes in your life that keep the inspiration alive?

I always tell students in my classes to take some action on what they learned within 24 hours after the class. They may walk out feeling excited about what they just learned, but if they do not take action quickly, that excitement wanes.

When you discover something that inspires you, look for the action. What can you do to channel your inspiration and get results?

Start with a simple step. In my Solo-preneuring workshop, I tell students that their first step might be brainstorming with a friend, making a phone call to learn about licensing requirements for their catering business, registering their business name (or coming up with one), or some other easy task. Once you have taken that first step, each following step is a little easier. Take the first step.

Focus on the results you want, not the process. That means focusing on the goal, not a specific way of accomplishing it. Often there are many different ways to get to the result you want. Be open to possibilities you may not have considered.

If something is truly important to you, do not let the obstacles stop you from getting it. There will be obstacles. There always are. As Randy Pausch said in The Last Lecture, the brick walls are there to stop the people who do not want it badly enough. They are there to stop the other people. Not you. Look for creative ways to get over or around the brick walls. It may take a while, but chances are that you will find a way that works for you.

Take in lots of raw material to help you to create dreams that inspire you, and then achieve those dreams. Read books, listen to music, attend lectures, look at art, talk to everyone you meet.

Inspiration is everywhere. The motivation comes from you.
